What should I check before calling about my heating or AC?
Check the thermostat is set to the right mode and temperature, the breaker for the system hasn't tripped, and the air filter isn't clogged. Those three cause a surprising number of no-heat and no-cool calls.
If the outdoor unit has ice on it, turn the system off and let it thaw before calling. Running it iced up can damage the compressor.

Ask for the contractor's license number and look it up on verify.tn.gov, the State of Tennessee's license search, before work starts. Ask for proof of insurance too.

Yes. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't use switches or the thermostat on your way out.
